Artist's Statement
My artwork incorporates elements of both painting and
sculptural modes. In the development of my work over
recent years I have explored how form contributes to
the aesthetic impact of my work and how this transforms
and/or relates to painted imagery upon these surfaces.
The physical base of my shaped forms are constructed
out of wood, which are then covered with pre-gessoed
and painted canvas. While I build, I consider the imagery
to be painted upon them and thus initiate a relationship
between figures and how they relate with one another.
It is the interest of time, space and how the individual
moves within this, which led me to document people in
everyday situations. The process becomes a documentation
of the human condition in contemporary society and narratives
of the instances between strangers̀ lives. The shaped
forms have taken on a new significance in my creating
them. I consider them as bends in a road, paths crossed,
corners turned. My intentions are to dynamically and
intimately engage the viewer within each piece so that
it is viewed from various vantage points, with a constantly
changing experience from one angle to another.
