Over
the last 7 years my artwork has been devoted to mainly
one object: the Classic Volkswagen Beetle. The Volkswagen
Beetle stemmed from my childhood; I owned a pink, plastic,
transparent VW Bug that I worshiped. This toy brought
me hours of fun, joy, security and comfort. All this sentiment
evolved into more than just a memory from the past, it
exploded into a whole other world in my art. My Volkswagen
Beetle is vulnerable, sensitive and human, unlike other
work in which “cars” represent mechanization
and other themes that are literal to the subject.
In the last couple of years my work depicts bloody bugs
in turbulent situations. These violent actions symbolize
moments before crashing into our greatest fears. The bugs
bleed as they crash into the snow, symbolizing a cold
harsh reality. After neglecting our fears for so long,
this reality becomes imminent.
We are constantly advised to take chances and to face
our fears, yet that first step contributes much turbulence
in our lives. After all, the unknown is frightening. It
takes courage and personal strength to overcome these
uncertainties.
This is an experience that we all have to deal with in
cycles throughout our lives. This body of work continues
to evolve in its own cycle which eventually goes through
a liberating experience that brings us to the next level
in our personal growth. And then down again to our next
cycle of turbulent situations. |
