sad & sad & the stranger sweet spot
2002
68”, 18” x 18” –18” x 22” circ.
birch veneer, headphones, microphones, hardware

Titled sad & sad & the stranger sweet spot, it is my first interactive work. A split cylindrical box about the size of an adult and made of birch is hung from the ceiling. The sculpture operates via a headphone and microphone on each of two opposite sides. The headphones are at ear level, and the microphones at chest level. The work requires two people to activate it by pressing a button located on the seam. The participants press their chest (approximately where their heart is) to the microphone and their ear to the headphone. They hear each others heart beating.
